Working as a Filipino Nurse in Germany

Here I am again.
I have been searching and let me say just ''perusing'' the internet for the past hour and I found out that there isn't a blog or anything of the sort about ,,How Filipino Nurses Can Work in Germany''.

Well, if you have read a particular past blog from me before, you would know all the requirements needed to have your Nursing education and your Phil. Board Exam ''Anerkannt'' or recognized in this country.

This may appear to be quite a complicated task, with all the steps and paperwork, but once you have everything they need, things will just go on smoothly.

I have not yet informed you guys on the state of my recognition. Well here it is: as you all well know, I applied for this recognition or ''Berufsanerkennung'' in the Regierungs Präsidium, Gesundheits Ministerium in Baden Württemberg a few months ago.

It took a long time because I still had to finish my german lessons and pass my B2-Niveau exam.
Once I had it, which was around the second week of May this year, I immediately went back to the Präsidium and submitted all my documents. ( the list of all the needed requirements are posted on a previous blog)  After a week they gave me my recognition.

A week later I applied for a job in a nearby Hospital, one week later, after one day of ''test/probe day'' where I worked one day in the hospital, I got the job.

Next week I will be calling the Hospital again and arrange for the signing of contract.

Aproximated around June 18, I will be starting my first day of work. yippeee! :)

So, because I have managed it, I think every other Filipino nurse can manage it too!

I graduated last April 2011, took my board last July, received the results last August, went to Germany end of September, took german lessons since October 2011, passed my B2 language test last May, got my job this June, 2012.

On my next post, I will be writing down more details.

in the meantime, if anyone has questions, feel free to comment down and write to me.

I am proud to be a Filipino Nurse!

Goodluck!!

  1. Hello! I am also a nurse. I graduated last April 2011 but I took the Dec 2011 board exam. I want to work in Germany as a nurse. Are you working as a nurse in the hospital you are referring to even though you have no work experience here in the Philippines? Can you please tell me the procedures that you went through like getting the visa etc. I am planning to study A1 TO B2 here in the Philippines and have a travel visa and apply there in Germany or through the net. I am hoping that you will answer my questions. I am really looking forward to your reply. Thank you very much and Godbless! - Ane

    1. Hi Sergio, well for one, it helps a lot if you take an intensive course in german. Second, I hope you know a lot of people here in germany who speak the language well because it helps you learn 80% faster if you talk with someone in german everyday.

Another thing, since you're here, start watching german TV series.IT's alright if you dont get every meaning at first. It will come.
the important thing is you get the ''feel'' of the language.

What I did as a starter before was also to buy children's books in german. I then highlighted all the words I didnt understand and used my dictionary to find out the meaning. Since I kept on forgetting the meanings, I wrote down the meanings immediately beside the highlighted words.

You can also buy/ borrow DVDs of movies or series with subtitles in german.
      that way, you can either:
see the movie in english and have the written german translation underneath,
      or
see it in german and read the english meaning,
      or
just to practice your german grammar and spelling,
you can watch it in german and observe the german subtitles.

I also used to buy index cards and write english words in front
and german equivalents at the back with the proper genders and I used to review them everday while waiting in the bus, in the train, at home, etc. anytime you'Re bored.

      hope this helps. :)

The rosetta stone computer program helps as well :))

  6. Hello there. :) I just wanna ask if there's a height requirement to work as a nurse in Germany? I'm just worried because I'm kinda petite. I recently passed my boards and therefore I haven't have any working experience as a regular staff nurse too here in the Philippines. I'm planning to work in Bonn because it is where my grandma lives. Did you go through agencies for application or you went in Germany first then applied? I'm really glad I found your blog. It helped me a lot. Thank you! :)

    1. hello, theres no height requirement to work as a nurse in germany :) :) i have a working mate from Croatia and shes only i think 5 flat :D :D shes already more than 35 years in Klinikum Schwabing :) knowing typical Germans, they really are big ..but with the right nursing techniques about lifting and positioning the patient, height doesnt matter :) :) im only 5'4 :D :D as far as i know, the German Government are still arguing about allowing filipino nurses (without Annerkennung) to be hired in germany,,,in my case, im doing an Annerkennung,,will took the test by June this year,,and if i passed it, im already a recognized nurse here in germany,,, for filipino nurses, there are 2 options to become a recognized nurse (by Regierung Oberbayern- my state) it is either you take the Annerkennungskurs plus no-salary-volunteer-nursing or you take the exam in german language,,if you passed the exam, you are lucky :D :D

      Löschen
    2. Oh. That's a relief. I thought my height would be a barrier. Thank you for responding. Are you sure they're still arguing? Because here in the Philippines, it's already been announced on national television that the German government already had negotiations with the Philippine governement with regards to letting filipino nurses work there in Germany. Can I ask a favor? If it's okay? Can you elaborate further the two options you mentioned in able for us to work there. Thank you so much. :)

    3. hi Eseryl, based on the papers the Regierung Oberbayern gave me last December 2012, two chances are, to take the Gesundheits krankenschwester/ krankenpfleger prüfung,, thats would be an exam comparable to our Nursing Licensure Examinations,, with only written exam,,, and the second option is to attend an Annerkennungskurs, volunteer in the hospital and then do the exam which is ONLY oral (mündliche prüfung) its more on practikal Nursing,,, i am the second filipina nurse who will try an Annerkennung here in Munich ,,the first one passed the Annerkennung and currently working in Klinikum Bogenhausen which is not so far from Klinikum Schwabing,, :) wish me Luck :3 :3

      Löschen
    4. Good luck and God bless! :)Why did you choose the second option? Will it be a lot easier than the other? Is it hard to learn German language? My parents are planning to enroll me in a German language course. I'm sorry if i'm bombarding you with so many questions. I'd really like to work there if given the chance.

  7. hello, im doing my Annerkennungskurs als Krankenschwester here in Munich Germany,,i was just wondering why you became automatically a qualified nurse here in Germany,, as far as i know, to became a qualified nurse, you have to get all the requirements, papers translated auf deutsch,,find a hospital who accepts you as a Practicant, or volunteer nurse (without salary) for less than 1 month and more than 6 months,,, (im doing a 6-month- praktikum at Klinikum Schwabing here in Munich and now on my 3rd month already),,after those things, you have to attend an Annerkenungslehrgang which lasts for 3months,,it is a nursing refreshers course in Deutsch,,and after the Annerkenungslehrgang, the final test will tell you that you passed all the qualifications they needed... im going to have my exam on June 2013,,its not so easy for me because im still having difficulties speaking the language,,but in terms of understanding, i can say that i can understand 98% of German langguage.. to the author, how you did the Annerkennung .. maybe the regierung of our perspective states here in germany has different qualifications to be recognized as a nurse,,,maybe it depends in our visas (im a student visa holder) and it wont allow me to work more than 3 months (full time) and 6months (part time),,,if you came here with working visa, it would be easy for you to get a job in the hospital without annerkenung,,, you are not allowed to do nursing works but you will be a nursing helper,,,, :) Rashell of Munich :)

    1. Hi Rashell, thanks for your replies. I live in the state of Baden-Württemberg, in a city near Stuttgart. I did my Annerkenung processing in the REgierungspräsidium in Stuttgart.
I went to their branch in Nordbahnhof Straße and asked for the requirements needed for me to be able to be recognized as a registered nurse in germany.
They gave me a list, and Im pretty sure I wrote it down on a previous blog, and when I had it all, I was automatically recognized.
I received my Annerkenung as Gesundheits- und Krankenpflegerin which is equivalent to the registered nurse, and since June 2012 I have been working as a full-time registered nurse in the neuro-surgical station/ward.

I never had to take a test about nursing. I only had to take the german test. If you want, you can inquire from the German-Embassy in Stuttgart, and ask for ms. Atienza-Kraus for further information.

AS to my visa, I am holding both german and philippine passports so I cannot help you much with that matter.

I think it would be best if you took your B2 test, process your annerkenung, have your recognition certificate, (I will post a picture of my certificate on my next post) and once you have it, you can apply for a job in a hospital.

Sometimes, it helps if you search for other ways to reach your goals.

  8. Hello there.. Thanks a lot for your blog spot.Thank God I found this site. My concern is,some of my papers are not yet translated. Can you recommend someone, the cheapest possible, who can translate my remaining papers?
I just passed my B1 exam last month here in Germany. And as you said I still need B2. Just came here last year holding a spouse visa and now with a residence permit.
Annerkenung... Haven't done it yet. Its a bit complicated and this practicum thing takes too long. Good thing that everything went well on you. I hope mine too.You mentioned about this police clearance, unfortunately, i think i will also do what you did. tsk.tsk.tsk. My license will expire this May, and that is another problem. But i know everything will come to pass.
Ich wunsche dir viel Erfolg. Godbless my friend.

    1. hi. I can recommend Ms. Jocelyn Mariano , to translate your documents. The german Embassy in Manila recommended her to us. She translates in English, German and French. And the Price is also not that expensive. You can maybe send her an email for an estimation because I dont think I am allowed to name the price here on the website.

      Goodluck :)

By the way, I just heard the news. Germany is hiring 500 nurses in Philippines. Thank God Germany is now open for our fellow nurses there. Nursing job there is a struggle. Sometimes I find it a business at all for some hospitals, pinagkakakitaan. I remember paying the training fee for 3 months and bringing my own gloves for me just to have an experience, then after I finished, no guarantee. Well i just hope this is the start of opportunities for nurses there and hoping for a lot of possibilities to come..

  10. hello.. i have plan to go to germany and use a student visa. i will be studying the language here in the Philippines. i would like to ask if there is a chance that i can avail a working visa after i study the advance nursing training there? if i will find an auxillary job in germany how many hours can i work that is allowable while being a student? thank you..

    1. If you have a student visa, you are not allowed to work full-time jobs. However, there are many available part-time jobs that you can have.

you will only acquire a student visa, if you present a letter of acceptance from a university / language to the embassy, along with other requirements.

I am convinced that you can also acquire a wokring visa once you're here if you secured yourself an employment. all you need to do then is submit a proof of emplyment to the embassy and apply for the working visa.

I suggest that before you take the advanced nursing training that you mentioned above, you can submit you school and past nursing experience records to the GesundheitsMinisterium for accreditation.

it is possible that you do not have to do this extra course anymore.

Seeing as our education as nurses there in the Philippines is a Bachelor's Degree, they will be recognizing it as their Gesundheits-/ Krankenpfleger Ausbildung ( Nurse Training).

That's what they did with my records.
But they do not recognize all countries.

Luckily for us, the Philippines , along with the US, is one of the countries that they do recognize.

Ask and Inquire always. This will save you time and money! :)

    1. hi Nicolas!

You can most definitely take your A Levels or B Levels exam there. you don't have to fly to Germany just to take the exam.

The Goethe Language Institute has branches worldwide and one is in Manila.

As far as I know, they are offering courses, as well as tests. A1 examinations are available, upto TestDAF levels.

you can check out their website for further information.

      http://www.goethe.de/ins/ph/map/lrn/prf/sd1/deindex.htm

Regarding the requirements so as to working in germany,
you first have to find a job or an employer here in germany that will guarantee your work upon arrival. For a full list of working-visa Documents required,
please check out this german government's webpage.

  12. Hi,

    Thanks for this helpful blog.

Since you said in your posts that you took the German language course form Oct 2011 to June 2012. Is it from A1 to B2?
what's your visa during your stay as a student of this language course?

I would also like to stay in Germany to do a language course but some says that it's only for a maximum stay of 3 months?

On the other hand, I would also like to know what are the other career opportunities for foreigners? Is their like a job site or classifieds that can help us?

I'm hoping for your kind response.

    1. hi Judee! :)

Yes, I studied german from A1- C1 in the span of 8 months. Each level takes approximately 2 months to finish.

I skipped my B1 level and proceeded directly with B2 because I wanted to hurry things up.

      so my levels officially were: A1, A2, B2, C1

in the end, what matters is not how long you studied german or if you completed all levels. (it's not grade school or high school or college)

what matters is the highest level of Examination that you took and passed. in my case, the TestDAf.

If you want to have a student visa, you first have to enroll in a school or a language institute here in germany, so that they can give the embassy a letter of acceptance as proof that you are indeed a student here.

duration of stay depends on the duration of your study here in germany :)

for a full list of the requirements, you can check out this official website.

      Required Documents
      - two fully completed application forms and required declaration in duplicate

      - two passport photographs (strict requirements, see details)

      - valid national passport and two copies of the data page (Please note these important regulations concerning your travel document/passport:
      (a) its validity has to extend the duration of the visa you are applying for by at least 3 months
      (b) it has to contain at least two blank pages;
      (c) it must have been issued within the previous 10 years. If it has been issued before that, your passport can not be accepted. That even even applies in cases where the validity has been extended by the authorities of your home country.

      - additional for non-US citizens: original of valid US alien registration card or valid US resident visa (type A, E, F, G, H, I, J, L, O, R) and two copies thereof

      - letter of acceptance of a German university/language school/college and two copies thereof

      - evidence that you have sufficient funds to support yourself while living in Germany and two copies thereof

      - your driver's license and/or utility bill in your name as proof of residence in the consular district where you plan to apply

      - Visa fee.

Please note: In individual cases, you may be required to provide additional documents.
